In the last few weeks, I’ve been trying to make my backpack lighter by figuring out what I really need to drag to work every day. The laptop was like the elephant in the bag – a solid 3 pounds that was really wearing me out. So, I decided to swap it out for my Galaxy Z Fold 6 for a bit, just to see if I could get by using only my phone for work stuff.
Now, I’ve heard whispers that the Galaxy S25 Ultra might drop earlier than expected, like in 2025. If that's the case, it'd better come with Samsung DeX support to replace my laptop completely. This feature’s been around in their top-notch phones for a while, but it's gotta step up its game if it wants to beat the current king of phones, the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
I mean, sure, Samsung’s probably betting big on some fancy new AI tricks to make the Galaxy S25 Ultra a hit. But let’s not forget about Samsung DeX – it’s been there all along, just chilling and waiting for its moment in the spotlight. In my book, giving it a serious upgrade is what’ll save the day for the Galaxy S25 Ultra and make it a true contender.
Bridging the phone-laptop gap
It pains me to say this, but Samsung DeX has been around since 2017, when it first came out with the Galaxy S8. Sure, they've thrown in some new stuff here and there over the years, but let's be honest, it's been kind of boring for the last three years.
Now, with the Galaxy S25 Ultra hopefully on the horizon, it's the perfect chance for Samsung to give DeX a fresh coat of paint. You see, DeX is like that bridge between laptops and phones that we've all been talking about forever. It's pretty cool that you can actually use it on touchscreens, which is something a lot of folks might not know.
So, I tried hooking up my Galaxy S24 Ultra and my Galaxy Z Fold 6 to this old portable monitor I have, and guess what? The whole thing turns into a big ol' touch-friendly tablet. It's like having a tablet and a laptop rolled into one, which is super handy for getting stuff done.
But here's the deal: people these days really want gadgets that can do it all, like how our phones already juggle being cameras, music players, and phones. If Samsung can step up their game with DeX on the Galaxy S25 Ultra, it might just be the thing to replace my laptop. But they've got some work to do to make that happen.
More Air Gesture support with the S Pen
Another component of Samsung DeX that could use a little spicing up is the Air Gestures on the S Pen. So far, the Galaxy S24 Ultra's leaks haven't shown us the S Pen, but I'm pretty sure it'll come with the S25 Ultra.
The S Pen is obviously a fantastic tool for that real pen-and-paper feel, but wouldn't it be cool if Samsung made it the main way to control DeX? Like, imagine it being like the hand gestures you'd use with the Apple Vision Pro, but with the S Pen instead.
Right now, when I'm using DeX, I mostly have to connect a real mouse to my phone to get around. Sure, it works, but it's not as smooth as I'd like. It'd be amazing if Samsung could make the S Pen the star of the show for navigating DeX. Picture the S Pen acting like a mouse cursor, but even better, because you could flick it in the air to do stuff like pinching and scrolling, you know, like we do with our fingers on a touch screen.
So, let's hope the future brings us a more gesture-friendly S Pen for DeX. It would make using DeX a much more natural and fun experience, like we're all wizards casting spells with our S Pens!
Samsung can’t afford to overlook DeX again
Just with every big phone release, I'm always keeping my fingers crossed that the price doesn't go up – especially after the S24 Ultra got more expensive last year. So, for the S25 Ultra, I'm really hoping it stays the same or even goes down a bit.
Now, let's talk about DeX. You know, that cool feature where you can use your Samsung phone like a computer by connecting it to a monitor? Yeah, it's a big deal. And with the iPhone 16 Pro Max not even in the same ballpark, Samsung's gotta step up their game. They can't just ignore DeX like it's yesterday's news. It's super important for them to give it a major upgrade and show that it's not just a fancy trick, but something you'd actually want to use every day.
And speaking of upgrades, have you heard about the Mac Mini M4? My buddy reviewed it and apparently you can connect it to a touchscreen monitor and it's a total game-changer. Wouldn't it be amazing if the iPhone 17 Pro Max could do that too? Samsung's gotta keep improving DeX so it's not only easy to use, but actually better than anything else out there. If they can make that happen with the Galaxy S25 Ultra, it'd be a real show-stopper!
