Australia Prohibits Kaspersky Software Over Security Threats
Australia has officially banned the use of Kaspersky security software across government systems, citing serious concerns over national security, espionage, and foreign interference. The decision aligns with similar actions taken by other nations, including the United States.
Stephanie Foster PSM, Secretary of the Department of Home Affairs, stated:
Concerns Over Data Exposure and Foreign Influence
A key factor behind the ban is the extensive data collection conducted by Kaspersky, which Australian authorities believe could be exposed to extrajudicial directives from foreign governments—potentially violating Australian laws.
Foster emphasized the need for a strong policy stance to protect critical infrastructure and guide government entities on the cybersecurity risks associated with Kaspersky’s products.
New Government Directive: Immediate Removal by April 2025
Under Direction 002-2025, issued on February 23, 2025, Australian government entities must:
✅ Prohibit new installations of Kaspersky software on government systems and devices.
✅ Remove all existing instances of Kaspersky products by April 1, 2025.
✅ Ensure compliance with cybersecurity standards and national security policies.
However, agencies may apply for temporary exemptions if they have a legitimate business need to use Kaspersky software. These exemptions will be subject to strict risk mitigation measures and will be time-limited.
Following the U.S. and Global Cybersecurity Trends
Australia’s decision follows a similar ban implemented by the United States in June 2024, which prohibited Kaspersky from selling its products in the U.S. or providing updates to existing customers. The company officially withdrew from the U.S. market in mid-July 2024.
With cybersecurity threats evolving rapidly, nations are tightening security measures to protect government systems from potential cyber risks linked to foreign entities.
