German authorities have filed charges against three Russian-German nationals accused of engaging in espionage for Russia's secret service. The individuals—identified as Dieter S., Alexander J., and Alex D.—allegedly collaborated with foreign intelligence agencies, posing a significant threat to national security.
Espionage and Sabotage Activities
According to prosecutors, Dieter S. not only gathered intelligence but also participated in sabotage operations, including photographing military installations in Germany. His alleged activities aimed to undermine Germany's national security, particularly in the context of the country's military support for Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Key Allegations Against Dieter S.:
- Involvement in sabotage activities.
- Collaborating with a member of Russia’s secret service linked to the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) armed unit.
- Planning and scouting for explosive and arson attacks targeting military infrastructure, railway lines, and industrial facilities.
The Arrest and Investigation
Dieter S. and Alexander J. were arrested in 2024 by the Federal Criminal Police Office (Bundeskriminalamt or BKA). Investigations revealed that from October 2023 onwards, Dieter S. communicated with his Russian contact about executing sabotage operations within Germany.
The alleged attacks aimed to disrupt Germany’s military aid to Ukraine, including the transport of military goods. Among the targets scouted by Dieter S. were:
- U.S. military facilities in Bavaria.
- A loading station in Upper Palatinate.
- A tool manufacturing company.
Prosecutors allege that Alexander J. and Alex D. assisted Dieter S. in gathering intelligence and preparing for these planned attacks.
Wider Espionage Crackdown
This case is part of a broader effort by German authorities to combat espionage activities. Similar cases recently surfaced, involving individuals working for foreign intelligence agencies:

Espionage: A Growing Threat
The recent surge in espionage cases highlights the rising complexity of international intelligence operations. From industrial sabotage to military intelligence leaks, foreign agencies continue to exploit insiders and gather critical information.
Germany’s Office of the Federal Prosecutor (Generalbundesanwalt) remains vigilant, emphasizing the need for robust counter-espionage measures to safeguard national security against evolving cyber and physical threats.
