FCC Unveils 'Cyber Trust Mark' to Enhance IoT Security Compliance

The U.S. government has officially launched the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark, a groundbreaking cybersecurity certification aimed at securing Internet-of-Things (IoT) consumer devices.

Strengthening IoT Security Standards

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "IoT products can be susceptible to a range of security vulnerabilities. Under this program, qualifying consumer smart products that meet robust cybersecurity standards will bear a label—including a new 'U.S. Cyber Trust Mark.'"

This new labeling system is designed to provide consumers with a clear indicator of a product’s security compliance.

How the Cyber Trust Mark Works

Each certified IoT device will feature a QR code, allowing users to access a registry with essential security details, including:

  • Duration of security support

  • Whether automatic software updates and patches are provided

  • Steps to change default passwords and enhance security settings

By offering transparency and easy-to-understand security information, the initiative aims to empower consumers to make informed decisions when purchasing IoT devices.

Third-Party Evaluation & Compliance

Originally announced in July 2023, the program will rely on third-party cybersecurity label administrators to review applications and authorize product certification. Compliance testing will be conducted by FCC-accredited laboratories to ensure devices meet strict cybersecurity standards.

Eligible IoT Devices

The Cyber Trust Mark will apply to a wide range of smart home and connected devices, including:

  • Home security cameras

  • Voice-activated assistants

  • Smart appliances

  • Fitness trackers

  • Garage door openers

  • Baby monitors

However, certain devices will be excluded from the program, such as:

  • Medical devices regulated by the FDA

  • Motor vehicles governed by the NHTSA

  • Industrial control systems

  • Enterprise IT infrastructure

  • Devices on the FCC’s Covered List

  • Products from companies flagged for national security risks

Application & Certification Process

Manufacturers seeking the Cyber Trust Mark must:

  1. Undergo cybersecurity testing by an FCC-recognized CyberLAB to verify compliance.

  2. Submit an application to a Cybersecurity Label Administrator with supporting documentation.

According to the White House, "The U.S. Cyber Trust Mark program enables manufacturers to certify their products based on rigorous cybersecurity criteria set by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Compliance testing ensures that consumers can easily identify and trust the security of the smart devices they bring into their homes."

Enhancing Consumer Confidence in IoT Security

With cyber threats on the rise, this initiative represents a proactive step in strengthening IoT security standards and boosting consumer trust in connected devices. The Cyber Trust Mark is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of secure IoT ecosystems in the United States.
